When in Berlin

Spree River, Berlin

Isn’t it funny how life’s best moments are usually the unplanned ones? From impromptu decisions to unintentional detours, it really feels like the magic of life only reveals itself when you’re not looking for it. A few weekends ago was one such example. With a meagre three days’ notice – Alex, our friend Jonas and I found ourselves huddled in the backseat of a stranger’s car, making our way up to Berlin for the weekend. It was our first trip […]

Hello, Heidelberg

Frankfurt is a wonderful place. This fact cannot be denied. Regardless of the wonderfulness of the city in which you live, however, there will always come a time where an escape (even just a quick one) is absolutely necessary. This past weekend was one such example. Camping on a mattress on the floor in a furniture-less apartment had finally begun to lose its charm, and our daily routine had started to turn the passing weeks into somewhat of a […]

Fritter and Loaf clock

With our impending move to Germany, food has – unfortunately – taken a bit of a backseat. Instead, just about every minute of our lives has been consumed with thoughts about passports, plane tickets and plans for our future apartment. The last one especially. As a designer, I’m adamant that my first home WILL be awesome. The problem? Awesome things are often expensive, and we don’t really have much of a budget to work with. Which […]

Signature Brooklyn Cardamon Glazed Duck Breast

Anyone in Joburg who takes good food very seriously has probably heard of Signature Restaurant in Morningside. Since it opened in 2009, Signature has been a popular choice for the city’s elite. It’s way up there with all of Jozi’s other fine dining establishments (think Thomas Maxwell, DW Eleven-13, etcetera etcetera), and its name is synonymous with excellent food, wine, service and presentation. What almost nobody knows though, is that a second Signature recently opened in the equally […]

A few Saturdays ago, we went on a casual Saturday meander to the Nan Hua Buddhist Temple in Bronkhorstspruit, east of Pretoria. After hearing so much about this place, we thought it would a tragedy not to have seen it before we leave for Germany in a few months’ time. Nan Hua is just over an hour from Joburg – a very comfortable distance for an afternoon excursion.

It’s official! Alex and I will be packing up our lives and moving to Germany in a few months’ time. While super exciting, both of us are also terrified at the thought of leaving our families, friends, comfort zones…and restaurants. Eating out in Germany is expensive. Sigh. Anyway, the kind folk at Zomato have given us some vouchers for Ziggies Caffe in Blairgowrie to celebrate. Which we’d really like to share with you. Ziggies is a really […]

DIY Salmon Sushi

Alex and I are both avid sushi lovers. Probably too much for our own good. At least twice a month we head to our favourite joint and pack away enough of the stuff to shock most onlookers. But for a change of scenery and as a nice family bonding exercise, we decided to try making it ourselves. I mean, how hard could it be? Pretty hard actually. Spending around 15 minutes on a single California […]

Nostalgic Summer Pasta

We don’t really have winter in Joburg. Well, we sure would like to think we do. The reality is that daytime temperatures rarely drop below 15°C here, which is probably a mild summer day for most parts of the world. When it does get colder than that though (the horror!), we all dash indoors and bask in our misery. Anyway, this pasta was thrown together for Saturday lunch on one of those misleadingly pleasant winter […]
